World Transplant Games
COVENTRY Petanque Club played host to the Great Britain team
which is competing in the 19th World Transplant Games in Durban,
South Africa later this month.
The squad visited Warwick University for a photo shoot and
took the opportunity for some petanque practice at Coventry PC's terrain at The
Burnt Post.
All the athletes competing at the World Transplant games from July 28 to August 4,
have received life giving and life enhancing organ transplants.
GB captain Mike Marshall said:” There are some important messages we try to get
across as part of the National UK Transplant Games and the World Transplant Games:
“There is an urgent need for more organ donation as the demand always exceeds the supply, which means many people may be waiting for years for a transplant.
“A donated organ can transform the life of the recipient. Modern transplant medicine has become very successful and allows most people who receive a donated organ to live a very good quality of life. Seeing the transplant athletes in action demonstrates this.
“Keeping active is very important for all transplant recipients and is a very important part of taking care of what is to the recipient, a priceless gift.”
The multi-talented squad will also be representing GB in other sports.
The squad consists of Ross Young (lawn bowls and petanque), Peter Hickey (volleyball, lawn bowls, petanque, 1500m and 800m), Stehen Wheeler ( 5k road race, golf, petanque, 5000m racewalk), Grace Newman (badminton, petanque, table tennis), Dino Maroudias (volleyball, petanque, lawn bowls, table tennis and lawn tennis) and Mike Marshall (petanque, badminton and javelin).

30/01/2013 Bill Spencer
It is with sadness that I report the passing of Bill Spencer on Sunday 20th. January.
Bill was a well known and popular figure on the West Midlands Pétanque scene throughout the late 20th. and early 21st century. He, together with his son and grandson, was a member of Coventry PC. for several years, until ill health forced him to end his playing days. The last time we saw him at the Burnt Post was at the club's 30th. anniversary celebrations in 2011 when he was not going to let his infirmity stop him throwing a few boules, even if he did need support to do so.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
His funeral will take place at Daventry Methodist Church, Golding Close
Daventry NN11 4FB at 10:45 AM Monday 4th. February.

18/02/2013 Coventry come 2nd. in Eurocup group semi.
A team of 8, comprising, Alf, Brian, Eileen, Gareth, John, Reg, Sheila and Tony represented the club in the 4th. round (semi-finals) of the Eurocup 2013, at North Herts Irish Club yesterday. After an early start we were treated to a fine, clear, if cold, day in Hertfordshire. Our group of 4 teams included Bancroft Park (Milton Keynes), The Engine (Baldock) and Harrow. The Engine were last years England representatives in the final so we knew that we would be facing some strong competition The first match was against Bancroft park. The two triples games were shared but we managed to win two of the three pairs games to take that match 3-2. Next up was The Engine. Two teams play from this Baldock pub and their other team, Sports Bar, had already progressed to the final in last week's semi, so we knew that they would be out to emulate their close rivals and indeed it was a tough task. Success in one triple gave us encouragement but unfortunately we lost the other triple and all of the pairs thus going down 4-1 against the Engine. That left us to face Harrow, a team with several well known characters playing for them. This started very well when we took one of the triples 13-3 but when that was followed up by losing the mixed Triples 3-13. The best we could now manage would be to win 4-1, a posibility encouraged by a swift 13-0 in the mixed pairs however one of the remaining pairs was lost to 10, we however win the match 3-2 by taking the final pairs game 13-11
The Eurocup finals will be between The Engine, The Sports Bar, Meadow PC and the Ship PC.
Full results of all 4th. round matches are on the EPA web site.
