Heart of England AGM 10th. November 2013
Notes on the Heart of England AGM held at Whitnash Sports & Social Club – 10-Nov-13
After the normal opening formalities of announcement of apologies for absence and confirming the constitutional notification of meeting, the accuracy of the minutes from the 2012 AGM were confirmed and the President gave his report.
He expressed concern about the lack of progress in attracting new players, and to the relegation of the region at the Inter-Regionals at Hayling Island this year. He noted that the players resident outside the region who had contributed to our maintaining first division status over recent years would probably seek progress elsewhere.
He commented on Brian Stote and Claire White being involved in the development of the National Junior Squad, the achievement of our ladies team of Carol Bradley, Carol Cox, Teresa Bingham and Eileen Sollis, supported by Natalie Turner, in reaching the finals of the National Qualifiers (finishing fourth) and also on the achievements of Jamie Lewis, Ben Treend, Sofiane Lachani and Jerome Rousseau in their successes at national level.
He noted that our regional membership had returned to the January 2012 numbers but with fewer juniors, a figure which had been exaggerated by the high numbers of juniors registered at Whitnash before the subsidy policy had changed.
He welcomed the fact that we had a new club (Les Nomades) which had provided a variation in playing conditions but stressed that we needed to increase the numbers in the region in the 25 to 50 year- old age group.
On the committee side, he noted that we have been without holders of senior posts amongst the officers during the year and that these needed to be filled urgently.
He noted that minor changes to entry fees were needed to maintain the regional capability to invest in projects such as junior development and the replenishment of regional kit.
He thanked David Mason for his work as Vice-President Playing and in coaching our juniors, John Emberton for his continuing efforts as Regional Treasurer, Dave Hancox for his coaching input, Nouri Beladaci for his work as PRO, Tony Thompson and Keith Turner for auditing the accounts and particularly Steve Bradley for his support as Regional Vice-President.
Apart from relegation at Hayling Island, his other disappointment was the need to cancel the regional presentation evening because of insufficient support and he urged the new committee to consider possible solutions to this problem.
He referred to his intention to stand down as President. He felt that the region had enjoyed a year of relative harmony and, with that, concluded his report.
The Treasurer’s report was adopted and a proposal by the full committee to increase the fees by £1 per player for all region-wide competitions was passed by 43 votes to 1.
The chairman took the unusual step of establishing various officer posts before addressing the President’s position.
From a combination of those already in post, those nominated prior to the meeting and nominations from the floor, the officer posts were filled as follows –
Deputy President – Ian Williams
Vice-President Playing – Bill Wood
Treasurer – John Emberton
Secretary – Trevor Gibb
PRO – Tony Sollis
Membership Secretary – David Kimpton
These posts being satisfactorily filled, Barry offered to continue in post as President for a further period of twelve months.
The auditors were re-appointed and after a suggestion from Tony Thompson that the job descriptions of posts to be filled could be published along with the notification of the AGM, the meeting was concluded and the second round of the winter pairs commenced.

HOE League 17/04/2013
ALL three Coventry Petanque Club teams kicked-off their Heart of England Summer
League campaign with tricky games.
Pride of place went to Leofric who gained a pleasing 2-2 draw at defending Division
One champions Stockton Knights.
Captain Brian Stote and Tony Thompson found the going tough against Jerome Rouseau and
Barry Scott with the Stockton duo taking 2, 3, 3, 4 and 1 in five ends to run
out 13-2 winners.
John Baxter and Alex Watkins produced some battling qualities to level the match
by coming from 12-8 down to edge out Ian Brittain and David Kimpton
13-12.
Thompson, Baxter and Watkins never led in their triples clash against Rouseau,
Scott and Kimpton. They were level at 6-6 after five ends but Stockton took
four on the next end after a jack trail when Leofric held three and successive
singles gave the hosts a 13-6 victory.
Knights looked on course to make a winning start in defence of the title as Brittain
opened up a useful 9-5 lead in the singles but Stote used all his
experience to mount a fightback and triumph 13-9.
Godiva, who were relegated from the top flight last season, faced a tough task as they
only fielded three players against last years runners up Stockton
Villagers.
The Coventry outfit had to concede the singles and Gareth Twitchett was, not
surprisingly, beaten 13-3 by John Emberton and Richard Powell in the
pairs.
But solid pointing from husband and wife duo, Tony and Eileen Sollis, secured a
comfortable 13-2 success over Caroline Powell and Wendy Brittain, while the
Godiva trio then teamed up to good effect to win the triples 13-6 and force an
unlikely 2-2 draw.
Spires suffered a 3-1 defeat in their opening Division Three clash against newcomer
Ufton Nomades who will be among the title favourites.
Spires lost both pairs matches with Alf Smallman and Irene Rogers going down 13-4 to
Jean Denis Scatena and Paul Robiquet, while Betty Thompson and Arthur Watts were
beaten 13-8 by Paul Stoodley and Morgan Critchley.
Watts reduced the arrears with a fine 13-9 singles victory over
Stoodley and they were on course for a draw as a thrilling triples clash
was locked at 12-12 but Nomades held their nerve and came out on top
13-12.
